Avebury walk

14 miles, apparently

We drove to Yatesbury, down a dead-end road and parked at the very small village hall. We walked up a track through some trees and then across fields. Kites, Buzzards and Corn Buntings.

We went up to Windmill Hill Neolithic camp. There were two mounds on the top of the hill. It rained a bit here.

Then down towards Avebury. It got very wet underfoot for a bit. R went barefoot and paddled, J got wet boots. The water was knee-deep in places. We met a woman who’d walked from Wroughton and had 13 miles to go back, now with wet feet.

The Red Lion pub in Avebury was full, so we went and had a look at the stone circle and walked down the Avenue.

Back in Avebury we had lunch in the community-run cafe. Then back past some more stones and along a bit of the Ridgeway.

On the way back into Yatesbury we passed an abandoned WW2 hangar. J’s grandpa worked at Yatesbury Camp during the war, repairing aircraft. There’s an old airstrip nearby.
