Friday: Tor Tour

We went for a walk.

13 and a bit miles. Steep in places.

Up to Hay Tor, then along the old granite tramway for a bit and through the remains of a 14th Century village. Lots of Pipits, Stonechats and Wheatears. Buzzard, Kestrel, Ravens. Up to Hound Tor, then along the road to the grave of Kitty Jay, guarded today by cows. Up to Great Hound Tor (and Bowerman’s Nose), then down to the Kestor Inn at Manaton. Nice beer and sandwiches. Then down through tall Sycamore and Hazel woodland to follow the crystal-clear River Bovey for a few miles. We stopped to watch a Dipper and J got stung by a wasp. Lots of red berries on the way (Hawthorn, Rowan, Holly) and fungi, including Fly Agaric. Back at the Rock Inn, nice dinner.
