We drove the mile to the car park at the southern end of Lake Vyrnwy. There was a hide with feeders and flocks of Siskins and assorted other small birds.
We walked the ‘blue’ trail through mixed woodland and only got slightly lost.
We saw a Tree Pipit for the first time.
Back at the reservoir dam we had a coffee and then walked up the road alongside the lake. We stopped to watch Pied Flycatchers and Goldcrests.
We heard a Redstart (identified with the Merlin app) but didn’t spot it.
A mile up the road and back, then we drove to the northern end of the lake and followed the tumbling river upstream to the waterfalls. We had to cross on stepping stones.
A bit further round the lake we parked and walked through Bluebell woods to a lakeside hide. We stopped for a bit and watched Pied Flycatchers going to and fro from a nest box.
Next stop, having nearly circumnavigated the lake, was the “giant hand”.
33 bird species today, some only heard and not seen: Cuckoo, Wood Warbler, Garden Warbler, Redstart.
Drink in the bar, There’s lots of taxidermy, in various states of disrepair, on the walls. A glass-fronted case contains a fascinating collection of all of the shotgun cartridges.
Nice dinner.
