Friday: Stone Curlews 2

We went back to Weeting Heath nature reserve first thing and watched the Stone Curlews and chicks again. Lapwings, normal Curlews, lots of Rabbits and Hares.

A couple came into the hide with a telescope (“Birdwatching for 50 years, been coming here every year since before they built the hide, there’s a Cuckoo likes to sit in that tree, and a Little Owl…”) and we had good views of a Stone Curlew through their telescope.

Then we went to Sutton Hoo. Overpriced and a little underwhelming. There were some Anglo Saxon burial mounds and a dimly-lit exhibition. Had lunch in the cafe.

Then we drove to a small car park in the woods near Blaxhall Heath.

The heath

We walked across the heath to the Blaxhall Ship pub, famous in traditional music circles.

The only other customer in the pub was on his phone when we arrived, but chatted to us after he’d finished his conversation. He did the sound for some of the bands that played in the pub. Tonight, we discovered after some enquiry with the barman, it’s Otter’s Pocket, a 6-piece jazz and blues outfit who will somehow squeeze into the small end of the pub. Some other, less memorable, chat ensued.

At Aldeburgh we checked in to the Brudenell and then walked along the shingle beach, blustery wind and a high tide.

Nice dinner of oysters, crab, hake, sole, cheese.
