Tuesday: Pen y Fan, Snow Bunting, Bramblings, Bullfinches

Thick mist first thing this morning, but the weather forecast was good. We grabbed some sandwiches at the Brecon Morrisons and then drove to the car park at the Storey Arms Centre. There were quite a few cars and a couple of Army lorries in the car park. We took the so-called ‘Motorway’ route, following clear well-maintained paths all the way. The start was fairly steep.

Route

On the way up every few minutes a sweaty soldier with a big backpack would jog past us coming down from the top.

It was bright and clear until we got almost to the top of Corn Du when we got up into the cloud.

Cloudy Corn Du

On the top of Corn Du there was a Snow Bunting (according to the book when J looked it up later it was probably a passage migrant).

There was also a group of people who asked us to take their photo holding a Boots on the Ground veteran support services charity banner. It was a bit chilly.

From Corn Du, in the thick cloud, we followed the easy path across to the slightly higher Pen y Fan. Lots of people there, including a party of school children.

Clouds

After a while the cloud disappeared and we had great views of the sunlit surroundings.

We walked along a ridge for a bit and then went back down by a different route.

We drove 5 minutes down the road and parked in the Garwnant visitor centre car park and ate our sandwiches.

Then we walked around a short trail. There were some waterfalls.

A Mountain Ash tree had a flock of Bramblings and Bullfinches feeding on the red berries.

We drove down the road a bit and walked out across the dam of the Llwyn-on reservoir. The water was flat like a mirror.

Reflections

After dinner we sat in the library and did the blog.
