We walked to Brecon from the hotel.

Route: 10.6 miles

As we left the hotel and turned the corner we had distant views of Pen-y-Fan.

There was a flock of Redwings in amongst the trees by the church.

We took a footpath along the River Usk. The river was fast-flowing and brown from the recent rain. Sections had roaring white rapids.

Walking by the river

Lots of birds about, including: Red Kite, Buzzard, Tree-Creeper, Nuthatch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, Dipper.

Too deep for boots

The river path joined the towpath of the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal at an aqueduct. We had to cross the aqueduct and walk down the tow path a bit in the wrong direction in order to cross the canal to get on the right side to walk into Brecon.

In Brecon, we stopped for coffee at the first cafe we came to, which happened to be at the Theatre.

The central area of town was closed to traffic as they were setting up a funfair. There were amusements and rides and dormant dodgems. There was candy floss.

We’d planned to have lunch in the Brecon Tap (local real ales, pies) but it wasn’t serving food today, so we walked up to the Cathedral hoping to eat at the Pilgrims Cafe there, but it was closed until further notice, so we walked back into town and had soup and a sandwich in a coffee shop.

Then back along the river rather than the canal, before joining the towpath again for the return.

Towpath reflections

Pen-y-fan was still there when we got back.
