Tuesday: Bryher

We walked down to the quay for 9:30 to see where today’s wildlife guided tour would be. Turned out there wasn’t one today, so we booked onto a boat trip around the Norrad (Northward) islands to look at seabirds, as the boat would drop us at Bryher afterwards. The boat didn’t leave until 11:15, so we went for a walk around The Garrison. On the way we booked dinner for Thursday at Tregarthen’s Hotel.

The boat trip was good. We saw some puffins, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars and some seals. Bright sunshine all the way but quite a swell, so hard to get pictures.

In the distance a big cruise ship, the Viking Venus, was approaching St Mary’s.

The boat dropped us on Bryher around 12:30, and we walked up the track to the Fraggle Rock bar where we had lunch (crab sandwiches, cod chowder).

After lunch we walked around Bryher. We climbed the slope behind the pub and looked over at Tresco.

The scenery was spectacular, with granite cliffs and crashing breakers in Hell Bay on the western side.

At the southern end we walked through the ruins of an old field system to Droppy Nose Point.

Back up the eastern edge of Bryher to The Town, where we bought provisions in the shop / Post Office and then an ice cream at the chandlery, and then caught the 16:45 boat back.

The ferry took us to see the cruise ship on the way back to St Mary’s.
