We caught the 10:15 ferry to Tresco from the Quay in Hugh Town. The ferry dropped us at Carn Near at the southern point of Tresco.

Near Carn Near

We walked up past the famous Abbey Gardens around the Great Pool (shelduck, coots, little grebes, Canada geese, heron, a confiding song thrush) to New Grimsby.

Then across to the eastern side of the island up to the ruined Blockhouse, from where we looked down on Old Grimsby and the glittering emerald sea and white sandy beaches.

We’d booked lunch for 12:30 at the New Inn, so we went there next. Nice crab and mackerel salads and fishcakes. Beer and Prosecco.

Lunch

After lunch we walked back down to the Abbey Gardens and paid to get in. Lots of lush tropical flora was exuding from every surface and crevice.

Initial hopes of having spotted a bird previously unrecognised by science were dashed when we realised we were looking at a starling with its face covered in orange pollen.

We saw a red squirrel. They have feeders for them here.

J stayed at the Abbey Gardens and R went back up to the northern part of Tresco, walking over heather moorland to a couple of ruined castles, and then back to the quay along the narrow. coastal path.

We met on the quay and got the 16:45 ferry back to St Mary’s.
