Saturday: world’s wettest walk

Overnight the storm called “Dennis” arrived properly. The wind howled round the hotel, rattling the wood in the old building.

After breakfast the hotel owner fixed the WiFi by rebooting the router, so we could check the weather forecast. Didn’t look too bad, so we went for a walk.

We did a 9-mile trip through woods, windswept high ground and waterlogged fields. It rained all day.

At one point we had to ford a stream and found frogspawn in a pool on the other side.

On the hills it was cold and windy, the rain lashing horizontally.

Donkeys.

At Kilve we crossed the main road and followed a footpath towards the sea.

The footpath.

Then we followed the lane back to Kilve and had lunch at the Hood Arms. We were soaked through and dripping water but the pub was friendly and welcoming. It’s been refurbished since were last there and is a bit more up-market now. We’d stayed over for one night in 2015 when we were visiting Halsway Manor for their summer fair.

After lunch we followed more muddy paths back to the hotel, where we wrung out dripping clothes and had hot showers.
