Such a contrast to yesterday’s weather. Bright sunshine, deep blue skies, the air cold and clear so we could see for miles from the high points on the moor.
After checking out we drove to the car park at Hound Tor. On the way, there was an uphill cycle speed trial going on up the road next to Hay Tor. Lots of spectators and cyclists, marshals in fluorescent jackets and the top car park taken over by vehicles and time-checkers. Past Hay Tor it quietened down.
From the Hound Tor car park we walked down the road to the grave of Kitty Jay.
Fresh flowers on it, as always, placed by an unknown hand so they say.
We turned left down a bridleway and did a good 6.5 mile walk across hillsides and through woods and damp fields. About to cross a stream, we surprised a roe deer. We were blocking the exit to the field and the deer scampered about in panic, running back and forth along a fence it was unable to get over. We gave the deer a wide berth and hoped it would calm down once we’d left the field.
At the half-way point we came back along the lanes. We saw buzzards, ravens, fieldfares, chaffinches, long-tailed tits.
