Checked out of Oransay and drove short distance through Loch Druidibeg RSPB reserve to Loch Sgioport with the aim of snorkelling and bothering the wildlife. Tarmac road ended and we drove the car down a steep bumpy track, parked, and walked down to the water’s edge. There were the remnant posts of a ruined pier sticking out of the water, clad in seaweed. It was approaching high tide and people were fishing on either side of the ruined pier, so we decided to come back later. Driving back up was harder than getting down, and we had to offload bags to make the car lighter so we could get up the slope without the wheels spinning on the spot.
Back at the RSPB car park we saw Jethro drive past (we’d arranged to meet him hereabouts). Finally did meet up with him, and did a good 3-mile walk on the moors around a freshwater loch. Good views of hen harriers, kestrels, mountains.
Back at Loch Sgioport the fishers had gone, so after oatcakes and cheese for lunch, R went snorkelling.
Lots of fish, sea urchins, starfish of all sizes, one very big about half a metre across.
Driving back, curious ponies barred our way at times.
Had tea and cake at Kildonan cafe,
then to Daliburgh Co-Op for supplies and then on to The Chalet, our self-catering place just outside Loch Boisdale. It’s very nice.
Steak for tea.
