Friday 5th July: South Uist 1

Went to Bornais and walked out to the headland past Viking remains that were not evident and a Pictish broch which was.

Pictish broch

Saw a short-eared owl hunting over the machair. Lots of lapwings, including young.

Young lapwing

Saw seals hauled out. Got mobbed by terns.

Saw the world’s longest earthworm.

Long worm

Drizzle, on and off throughout.

Drove to Lochboisdale and located our self-catering chalet for tomorrow, then went to Kildonan museum and had lunch in the cafe and then spent an interesting time in the museum learning about Uist crofting life and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Looked like the rain was lessening, so we drove to Homore and looked at the ruined medieval chapels

and then walked out to the expanse of pristine sandy beach.

Beach

Lots of skylarks.

Skylark

There were some waders: redshank, curlew, ringed plover.
Drove to Loch Bi to look for eagles, but none there. Drove further on round the coast road and stopped where it turned into a gravel track. Lots of ravens, starlings and gulls feeding on the seaweed.
Back to Orasay Inn. Jethro came for dinner, having arrived yesterday for Ceolas.
Nice views from the restaurant tonight, the air being clear and the sun out.

View

Strolled up the lane after dinner to look at the headland, moors and loch.
