Rained all day.
Lie in and late breakfast. Went to Lochmaddy museum. Very interesting exhibition on local geology – learnt about Gneiss pseudotachlyte: a rare igneous formation formed by intense metamorphic pressure. Found here along the Hebridean fault, and in meteor craters.
Also a the museum was an exhibition of photos of the dull celtic band Runrig, and an exhibition of local paintings. We had a coffee.
Drove south and stopped at a couple of pointless gift shops, had lunch at the Dark Island hotel on Benbecula. Still raining.
Went to Loch Bi, recommended by Steve for sea eagles. Parked by a church and looked out at the islands in the loch, but nothing much apart from geese and a family of shelducks. Visibility poor due to the mist and rain.
Drove to Loch Sgioport on South Uist via Loch Druidibeag RSPB reserve to check out snorkeling sites. Sgioport looks good, and Druidibeg also promising for a walk when weather improves: high heather moor and a freshwater lochan.
Checked into Oronsay Inn. Bit basic. R walked up the road in the rain and over the moor and got wet.
Dinner: this hotel has a reputation for great food. Not sure why.
Walked up the road a bit after dinner, when the rain had stopped.
