Google redirected us through rural Shropshire to avoid a motorway accident, so we drove for an hour through green lanes passing fields of crimson poppies iridescent in the morning sunlight. M6 was slow, as always.

We got some exercise by walking down to the Clyde and along its banks to the west, then back up through downtown. It’s choked with traffic and a bit of a dump. The grid street layout means every few paces you have stop at a pedestrian crossing.
